6 Things You Need to Know Before You Tackle Your DIY Fence Project

There is nothing more rewarding than a DIY project. Not only will you save money, but you should also feel a genuine sense of pride every time you admire your handy work. The flip side is that DIY projects can also cause a lot of frustration. Here are 6 tips we offer people before they tackle our DIY vinyl fence and DIY aluminum fence to help avoid potential frustration and have the best DIY fence experience possible.

1. Read the installation guides. Twice.

Sure it can be a pain, and echoes of a gruff “real men don’t read instructions” voice may chime in your head, but when it comes to a WamBam Fence, read the instructions, and carefully. This will save you a lot of potential grief and hassles down the road. You can view our installation guides here. Our Murphy’s Fence Laws covers what to do when you encounter certain pitfalls.

2. Don’t mistake yourself for Bob Villa.

It’s great to tackle a DIY project, and we are confident that you’ll be able to install a WamBam Fence. However, overconfidence can cause problems. Go into the the project with an attitude of humility and expect that you will encounter some obstacles, but know that you’ll get through them as they arrive (you can also use our technical support for help).

3. Don’t give up when the going gets tough.

Installing a fence is hard work, and even a no-dig fence is hard work. Don’t feel bad if you’re stressed out or overwhelmed at points. It’s completely normal. Take a deep breath and a break. Go for walk, have a snack, or read the paper. The project will probably not seem so daunting with a fresh mind.

4. Grab a helper

We have many customers install their WamBam Fence single-handedly, and this does work. However, customers who have help tend to have a better experience. Having someone help with the labor not only makes it easier, but more fun. Plus, it’s great to have someone to talk to during the project, either for social reasons or for help troubleshooting.

5. Measure twice, cut once

The devil is in the details, and your fence is no exception. Take time with your measurements and cutting. Double check before you make the cut. Double check that the pipe really is adjusted to level with the leveling donut. You don’t want to get so lost in the weeds that it takes you a year to install the fence, but you definitely don’t want to approach it with a “slap it together” mentality.

6. Give yourself enough time

If you expect to WamBam your fence in the yard in an afternoon, you’re going to end up frustrated, disappointed, or your final fence may look like something out of a Hitchcock movie. For the best experience, give yourself time. The fence can be installed over a couple days or weekends. If you don’t feel rushed, you’re going to enjoy the process more, and the end result will look better too. Keep in mind that you purchased a fence with a lifetime warranty. You’ll be looking at it for a long time, so you might as well do it right.

Fence Colors

When it comes to fence color, WamBam doesn't have too many options.

When it comes to fence color, WamBam doesn’t have too many options.

“Why doesn’t your fence come in more colors?” This is a question that comes up every so often by customers looking for more vinyl fence options.

While we do offer tan vinyl privacy fence and black aluminum fence, that’s where our selection ends. No tan vinyl picket fence. No greens, grays, or black vinyl. While selection is nice for customers, we choose to stick with the 80/20 rule. This means that we want to sell the 20% of products that make up 80% of our business. We feel that by doing this, we can run a more efficient business. Because of the efficiencies, we can then offer our customers the best price. In our experience, 80-90% of the people who want vinyl fence are looking for white anyway.

If you’re looking for a white vinyl fence, tan vinyl privacy fence, or black aluminum, WamBam may be a perfect fit for you. If you are looking for different colors, check out our competitors. Many of them make a great product with plenty of color selection.

Information about our Back Order

My name is Denise and I do the inventory management for WamBam Fence. Sadly, I should be fired! My crystal ball failed me late this spring and we are now back ordered on most of our privacy fence.

WamBam Fence has experienced significant growth this year. It’s been amazing, and we are so grateful for each and every one of our customers. But when we projected growth for this year, we were conservative. We love being proven wrong with our projections when they exceed our expectations, but the downside is inventory issues. While we were touch and go for a few products, we seemed to be able to stay just ahead of the game for most of the spring. Until recently.

Our privacy fence sold like hot cakes unexpectedly in June. While this is a great problem to have, we completely sold out and it happened too quickly to react in time. The end result is that we don’t expect another shipment of privacy fence until the end of July (for Steady Freddy) and mid-August (for Curious George) at the earliest, and if there are minor delays, it will be longer.

What to do if you need privacy fence

We realize some people cannot wait for stock issues to get sorted out, but in our experience, most people can wait a few weeks for their fence. Here are some options you have:

1. We still have the Big Ben Privacy Fence and dropped the price from $109 per panel to $99 per panel to try to help ease the back order pain.
2. We will be happy to email you when the fence is back in stock if you want to shoot us an email and request us to do so.
3. You may place your order now to reserve your panels when they come in stock. We require credit card information to hold the panels, but will not charge your card until we confirm it with you and the panels ship.

We do expect it to take a couple shipments to catch up, so if you want to be assured of getting stock on the next shipment, we highly recommend that you reserve your panels now. You may request a quote, call us, or email us to do so.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused, and thank you for your patience!

Did You Know?

We know our vinyl is much better quality than the box stores, and we’re proud of the quality product we offer. However, we were pretty surprised recently when we delved a little deeper and took the actual weight of a couple of their panels and compared it to ours. Ours weighed 30%-40% more per foot! We knew our product was a lot more dense, but we were surprised that the weight was so much more.

Shining the same flashlight in a WamBam rail illustrates the thickness of the vinyl.

Since we notice fencing of all kinds when we drive around in our daily lives, we often see homes with box store fences that look translucent in the sunlight. In other words, they are so thin that the sun shines through. The price may be right, but the age old truth “you get what you pay for” holds true. This thin product will not last, which means you’ll have to replace it way sooner than you want to, resulting in additional time and money.

Just make sure you do all your homework when buying a vinyl fence. You want a product that will perform consistently over the lifetime of the product, and our lifetime guarantee gives that peace of mind. There are many great manufacturers in the fence industry that extrude a quality product, so even if you don’t choose our fence, just make sure that you choose one that will stand the test of time- and won’t act as an outdoor lampshade!
