Mailbox Size and Reinforcement

Mailboxes can vary greatly in style, size, and weight. As such, we have recommended sizes for our Zippity mailbox posts and some suggestions for accommodating mailboxes outside the suggested size.

Size

We recommend purchasing a medium-sized mailbox that is no heavier than 8-10 pounds. If your mailbox weighs more than 10lbs, we recommend using one or all of the additional reinforcement methods below.

Mounting Your Mailbox

Most mailboxes come with their own mounting brackets; however, they are often sized for 4” wide arms. Zippity mailbox arms are 5” wide, so we recommend using adjustable brackets.

Additional Arm Reinforcement

L-Brackets

  1. Purchase white L-bracket at local hardware store. Galvanized Steel brackets can be purchased and painted with metal adhesive paint as well.
  2. Position the bracket under the post arm.
  3.  Secure the bracket to the bottom of the arm and the front of the post.

Post Reinforcement

If the mailbox is particularly heavy, the whole post can start to lean even with reinforcement to the arm. Ground reinforcement may be necessary in this case.

  1. Dig hole around pipe anchor in ground. Recommended hole width is at least 6″ diameter and 10″ deep.
  2. Fill with gravel or concrete.
  3. Wait for the concrete to dry (per concrete instructions).
  4. Cover top of concrete with dirt.
