How to create a double wide gate opening using two WamBam gates

Need a wider opening than a single gate provides — for a riding lawnmower, trailer, or vehicle access? You can use two WamBam gates side by side to create a double wide opening. It’s a popular and effective solution when planned correctly.

The key to a successful double gate install is getting the pipe anchor spacing right. Because there is no post in the center of the opening, both gates need to be hung at precisely the right distance apart so they meet cleanly in the middle and latch securely gate-to-gate.

How a double gate works

A double gate setup uses two standard single gates that swing open from opposite sides and meet in the middle of the opening — with no post between them. Here’s how it comes together:

• Each gate hangs from its own post on the outer edge of the opening, typically with a fence panel running in-line on the other side of that post.
• The two gates swing toward each other and meet in the center of the opening, where they latch directly gate-to-gate — no center post required.
• One gate carries the latch hardware. The other gate carries a fixed pin or receiver that the latch connects to.
• When both gates are open, you have a combined opening that is roughly twice the width of a single gate.

Important: Because the two gates latch to each other rather than to a post, the distance between the two hinge posts must be precise. Even a small error in pipe anchor placement will prevent the gates from meeting and latching correctly. Use the chart below before you install anything.

The measurements below show the center-to-center distance between the two hinge post pipe anchors for a correctly spaced double gate opening. Measure carefully and mark your anchor locations before you pound anything into the ground.

Before you install

• Read the corresponding installation guide for your gate style before you begin. The double gate setup follows the same process for each individual gate — the critical difference is the spacing between the two hinge post anchors.
• Make sure the ground is as level as possible across the full width of the opening. Gates are not rackable and need a relatively flat surface to swing and latch correctly.
• Decide in advance which gate will carry the latch and which will carry the fixed pin. Either gate can do either job — just be consistent.
• Consider adding a drop rod or cane bolt to one gate so it can be pinned to the ground when the opening is not in use. This gives the second gate a stable point to latch against in windy conditions.
